Excerpt from The Cold Grapery, From Direct American Practice: Being a Concise and Detailed Treatise on the Cultivation of the Exotic Grape-Vine, Under Glass, Without Artificial Heat
To literary talent I aspire not, but stand. Responsible for the practice and what few. Scientific observations occur. The following pages are the penning down of a few evenings at horn e; of the scattered and integral portions of my own practice. There is nothing laid down, but has been found to correspond with what is recorded. It would have been easy to swell out the size of the book, by quoting European authors, and giving European practice, but this has been purposely avoided, and there is no occasion for it in a practical monograph of this character. The whole is adapted for, and has been experienced, in the United States, and is strictly suited to the climate.
