Pizarro's coat or arms. - When at Trujillo, I saw on the house pointed out to travellers as that formerly occupied by Pizarro, an escutcheon with the conqueror's arms emblazoned thereon. It was surmounted by a small shield, with a banana or cocoa nut-tree in its centre, and a bear (or more probably a pig, from Pizzaro having been a swineherd) standing, one on either side of the tree on their hind legs, and resting their fore legs upon the upper part of the trunk of the tree.

From their origins in the eleventh century as a charitable organization dedicated to caring for pilgrims in Jerusalem, the Hospitallers evolved into a formidable military force that played a significant role in the Crusades and the defense of Christian Europe. The book examines the order's complex internal structure, its vast network of commanderies and fortifications, and its involvement in major historical events such as the Siege of Malta and the Battle of Lepanto. Through a combination of archival research and vivid storytelling, the author sheds new light on the rise and fall of this extraordinary organization whose legacy continues to resonate today.
