I never was (0 thirlty after Fame,nor fo deltitute of other hopes and means better and more cer taine to attaine it for Kings have gain'd glorious Titles from their F avourers by writing againit private Men, as Henry the 8th did againlt Luther 3 but no Man ever gain'd much honour by writing againlt a King, as not ui'ually meeting with that force of Argument in fuch Court'ly Antagonijls, which to convince might add to his Reputation. Kings molt commonly, though firong in Legions, are but weak at Arguments as they who ever-have accullom'd from the Cradle to ui'e thir Will only as their right hand, their Reafon always as thir left. Whence unexpeftedly coufirain'd to that kind of combate, they prove but weak and pm my Adverfaries Neverthelefsfor their fakes who through cullom, fimplicity, or want of better teaching, have not more ferioufly confider'd Kings, then in the gaudy Name of Majelty, and admire them and thir doings as if they breath'd not the fame breath with other mortal Men, I iball make no fcruple to take up (for it fcems to be the challenge both of him and all his Party) this Gauntlet, though a King's, in the behalfe of Liberty and the Common-wealth.
