Excerpt from Mezzofanti's System Of Learning Languages Applied To The Study Of French: With A Treatise On French Versification, And A Dictionary Of Idioms, Peculiar Expressions, Etc
If, therefore, for speaking and writing we make use of words, it is evident that grammar is of no utility if we do not possess those words upon which to apply its rules. Whence it follows, that simply with grammar we cannot do any thing towards speaking or writing; whereas, by knowledge of some words used with or without grammatical correctness, it is by no means impossible to make ourselves at least intelligible.
I am not to be betrayed, by any enthusiastic admiration of the rare instances where men are known to speak a foreign lan guage toleran well without having received any instruction in it, into the error of pronouncing against all study of grammar. On the contrary, I am persuaded that the persons endowed with that rare capacity would derive immense advantage from application to some good method, such as those of Manesca, Ollendorfi', and others; in which, by the employment of a system no less ingenious than simple, the student is made acquainted with all the resources of the language, and where the rules are cited only in support of propositions which the student would himself discover in the observation of the examples. Still there seems a vacancy to be filled, a want remain to be sup plied, when we consider how effective is the result that may be obtained, but is not, by the study of the great and constant affinity that exists between the French and English languages; an affinity so conspicuous, that no student, however little advanced in the acquirement of one, being already familiar with the other, can avoid having his attention drawn to it.
