Contemporain de Wyclef, il remit en honneur, comme lui, l'étude de l'écriture sainte et des Pères de l'église, et la prédication de l'évangile en langue vulgaire, qu'il voulait substituer aux exercices desséchants et stériles de la scolastique. Compatriote de Maerlant et de Ruysbroek, il a continué la sainte croi sade entreprise par eux contre les vices du clergé et l'ignorance des ordres mendiants. Enfin, fondateur des confréries dela vie commune et de la congrégation de Windesheim, il a puissamment contribué à la renais sance des lettres anciennes et au réveil du mysticisme moral, non seulement dans sa patrie, mais dans tous les pays environnants. Tels sont les titres qui le recom mandant à l'attention du littérateur et du moraliste.
