L'auteur du Liber de Prodigus est un de ceux sur lesquels on n'a que de bien faibles notions; aussi sommes - nous forcé de nous en tenir à reproduire ici, à peu de choses près, ce que contient l'article publié par nous sur cet écrivain dans la Biographie uni corsello de M. Michaud (tome un, page h78). Julius Obsequens vivait, selon les conjectures les plus vraisemblables, dans la der niere moitié du Ive siècle, un peu avant le règne de l'empereur Honorius et il était contemporain de l'historien Paul Orose. Son Livre des Prodiges, le seul ouvrage par lequel il se soit fait con naître, est extrait, en grande partie, des historiens qui l'ont pré cédé et principalement de Tite - Live. Aussi crédule 'que ce der nier, Obsequens emprunte souvent ses exmessions sans se mettre en peine de rien vérifier. Une partie du Livre des Prodiges a été perdue; ce qui nous en reste s'étend depuis le consulat de L. Sci pion et de C. Lélius jusqu'à celui de P. Fabius et de Q. Élius c'est - à - dire depuis l'an 25h jusqu'à l'an 11 avant Jésus - Christ. Conrad Lycosthènes a fait, pour remplacer ce qui est perdu, des suppléments qu'il a extraits de tite-live, de Denys d'halicar nasse d'eutrope et d'orose, ainsi qu'il le déclare lui-même dans sa préface'. Si l'on veut comparer le style d'obsequens avec celui de plusieurs autres écrivains latins des 1116 et 1ve siècles, on y trouvera plus de simplicité et de clarté, et l'on pourra remarquer qu'il n'est point tombé dans cette obscurité qui était le défaut presque général des auteurs d'une époque où la langue latine per dait Chaque jour de son ancienne pureté.
