Excerpt from Effect of the Variation of Initial and Back Pressure on the Economy of a Simple, High Speed, Automatic Steam Engine: A Thesis
The performance of a steam engine is often ex pressed in terms of a certain weight of water per horse-power per hour. This is a very indefinite rating for comparison except where conditions of initial and back pressure and quality are the same, as the weight of steam used is largely depen dent on these conditions. This series of tests was undertaken for the purpose of determining What relation exists between the economy of a steam engine and the initial and neck pressures.

Paperback. Condition: New. Print on Demand. This book scrutinizes the relationship between the economics of steam engines and their operating pressures. It analyzes the impact of initial and back pressure on engine performance, providing insights into the optimal conditions for achieving higher efficiency and lower water rates. By studying the behavior of a high-speed, automatic Phoenix engine, the author establishes a direct correlation between increased initial pressure and improved economy, up to a certain threshold. The book also explores the effects of varying back pressure, demonstrating a linear increase in water rate as back pressure rises. The author utilizes established standards and meticulous experimental techniques to ensure the accuracy of their findings. Ultimately, this book offers valuable guidance for engineers and researchers seeking to optimize the design and operation of steam engines, contributing to the broader understanding of steam power technology in the industrial era.
