Ritual Conformity (Classic Reprint): Interpretations of the Rubrics of the Prayer-Book, Agreed Upon by a Conference Held at All Saints, Margaret-Street, 1880 1881 - Softcover
Synopsis
Unraveling 17th-century liturgy through careful notes
This edition clarifies how a conference of churchmen interpreted the Prayer-Book rubrics and aimed to keep faith with its spirit, not to rewrite it. Readers will follow how debates over ritual practice were resolved with practical, loyal guidance.
The book collects the conference’s discussions and notes, showing how ancient customs, modern practice, and legal questions intersect in Anglican worship. It emphasizes measured interpretation over rigid literalism and explains why certain rubrics were read in a particular way to preserve orderly worship.
- How the Prayer-Book’s language and history influence current understandings
- Guidance on applying rubrics in parish life without overhauling the book
- Insights into the balance between tradition, reform, and practical worship
- Context for decisions about ceremony, discipline, and liturgical arrangements
Ideal for readers of church history, liturgy, and Anglican studies seeking a grounded, era-informed view of ritual interpretation.

Paperback. Condition: New. Print on Demand. This book offers detailed interpretations of the rubrics and ceremonies of the Book of Common Prayer, originally written in the sixteenth century and revised in 1662. It is a valuable resource for clergy and laypeople alike, as the authors have attempted to take into account modern prejudice as well as historical context. Their goal is to provide a deeper understanding of the Prayer Book, both for those who adhere closely to its principles and those who are more open to change. The authors draw on a wide range of sources, including ancient customs, the original Latin translation, and contemporaneous texts, to provide a comprehensive overview of the Prayer Book's history and significance. Their insights have been unanimously agreed upon by members of the assembly who studied the rubrics over a four-year period. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. In rare cases, an imperfection in the original, such as a blemish or missing page, may be replicated in the book. print-on-demand item. Seller Inventory # 9781332933877_0
