Excerpt from A Dictionary of the Central Nicobarese Language (English-Nicobarese and Nicobarese-English): With Appendices Containing a Comparison of Synonymous Words in the Remaining Nicobarese Forms and Other Matters
During subsequent periods of my official residences in these Islands prior to the year 1880, while making ethnological researches among the aborigines, I arranged a Vocabulary con taining some words with numerous illustrative phrases. Government granted me a subvention for printing this work in 1883, but as I had at that time volunteered for the appointment at the N icobars - recently rendered vacant by the murder of Mr. De Roepstorff - I thought it advisable to delay the publi ca tion of my Vocabulary until I had availed myself of the opportunity thus Offered to verify my notation of the various complex sounds in the N icobarese language, and to enlarge the scope of the work.
