A virtuous young woman named Ellen is also introduced into the family, and despite the reservations of many of the other family members, she becomes a favorite of the elderly Lord Castle Howell, a recluse and wealthy neighbor. As the story progresses, the hidden intentions of Lord Claverton are revealed, which sets off a chain of events that threatens to tear apart the close-knit Meredith family.
