As a result, he states that the city of New York has profited more from the trade of Pennsylvaniaâs mineral wealth and agricultural output than the state's own major city. Gowen contends that Philadelphia should have connected all of Pennsylvaniaâs vital industries and cities by rail in order to leverage the regionâs vast resources and remain the main commercial hub of the state. Instead, the Pennsylvania Railroad Company has focused on acquiring western trade routes, which has led to a neglect of Pennsylvania industry. Gowen argues that unless the city can reclaim its role as the transportation hub of Pennsylvania, its economy and influence will suffer.
