Paperback. Condition: New. Print on Demand. This book charts the genesis of religious belief, exploring the origins of gods and the evolution of monotheism. It traces the development of God as a concept from its early animist roots to its later, more abstract Christian form. Drawing on a range of evidence from anthropology and archaeology, the author argues that the belief in gods stems from a primitive practice of worshiping dead ancestors. As societies grew more complex, these ancestral spirits were gradually transformed into deities with superhuman powers, leading to the rise of polytheism. The book also examines the social and cultural factors that contributed to the emergence of monotheism, highlighting the role of kingship and the development of centralized states. Through an exploration of diverse religious traditions, this study provides new insights into the nature and evolution of belief in a divine being, shedding light on the enduring influence of ancestral worship on human spirituality.
