Excerpt from A Discourse About Tradition: Shewing What Is Meant by It, and What Tradition Is to Be Received, and What Tradition Is to Be Rejected
Traditions, which were certainly once in the'chureh, but now utterly loll. There is no queliion to be made, but the Apoflles taught the firlt Chrifiians the meaning of thofe hard places 'which we find in their and Other hol Writings. But who can tell us where to find certainly fo much as one of them? And there fore where is the fidelity of this Church, which boafis fo much to be the Keeper of. Facred Traditions? For nothing is more deh rable than tho e Apofiolical Interpretations of Scripture; no thing could be more ufeful and yet we have no hope to meet with them either there, or indeed any where elfe. Which is no reproach to Other Churches, who do not pretend to more than is written; but reflefis much upon them, and difcredits them, who challenge the power of the whole 'church intirely, and would palis not onely for the fole Kee rs and Witnelies of Divine Truth; but for careful prefervers o it. For of what (hould they have been more careful than of thefe ufeful things, whereof they can tell us noihingi when of unprofitable Ceremonies they have mofi devoutly kept, if we could believe them, a very great num her.

Paperback. Condition: New. Print on Demand. This book is a treatise on Christian tradition, examining its origins, development, and reliability. The author argues that tradition is a valid source of religious knowledge, but only when it can be shown to have originated with Christ or his apostles. The author also discusses the role of the Church in preserving and interpreting tradition, and the dangers of relying on private interpretations or traditions that have been corrupted over time. Ultimately, the author encourages readers to use their own reason and judgment when evaluating tradition, and to focus on the teachings of Christ as revealed in scripture.
