Excerpt from Exercises on the French Subjunctive
This little book is intended to be used as a supplementary aid to French prose composition. It is the common experience of teachers of French that fairly advanced pupils who have a good command of vocabulary and can write the language with some correctness constantly break down in the employment of the Sub junctive. Although no amount of theory can take the place of the instinct which guides a native in the use of the mood, it is likely that the careful study of classified examples may eventually result in the creation of something resembling that instinct. The compiler believes that a student who wishes really to know French might do worse than devote a year to what is at the same time the great difficulty and the characteristic feature of the language.
