Je fais un livre de ce Mémoire, quoiqu'il ne se recom mande pas d'une distinction officielle. Les appréciations de ses juges m'y encouragent, et j'y suis porté par la conscience de l'avoir composé avec tout le soin que les oeuvres sérieuses exigent. Si, grâce aux conseils que l'académie a joints à ses critiques, ce livre évitait devant le public les écueils que sous sa première forme il a rencontrés près d'elle, et si, en quelques parties au moins, il ne paraissait pas indigne de se placer à côté des travaux d'histoire sociale dont cette éminente com pagaie a su si a propos indiquer le cadre et faire doter la science, il aurait obtenu le succès que j'ambitionne le plus pour lui.
