Si, grâce aux conseils que l'académie a joints à ses critiques, ce livre évitait devant le public les écueils que sous sa première forme il a rencontrés près d'elle, et si, en quelques parties au moins, il ne paraissait pas indigne de se placer à côté des travaux d'histoire sociale dont cette éminente com pagaie a su si a propos indiquer le cadre et faire doter la science, il aurait obtenu le succès que j'ambitionne le plus pour lui.
