Paperback. Condition: New. Print on Demand. This book explores how the French monarchy evolved in terms of its administration and governance during the reign of King Louis XIII. It shows how Cardinal Richelieuâs time as chief minister was one of transition from a medieval structure of feudal governance toward a modern, centralized state. Richelieu asserted royal authority over the nobility, established the role of the kingâs council, and professionalized government administration. The changes instituted during Richelieuâs ministry contributed to the rise of royal absolutism, which would culminate under Louis XIV.
