Synopsis

Excerpt from Object Lessons In French, Vol. 2

The title Object Lessons in French gives sufficient ex planation of the underlying principle of this little book, and of the method which, it is suggested, the teacher should fol low throughout the exercises. The object lessons and nature lessons are in French instead of English. In the opinion of the writer, the first lessons in a living language should be given orally, with the help of the blackboard and of pictures, the object being to associate the name 'with the thing seen. An example of such a preliminary lesson will be found on page vii. The pupil, having in this way become familiar with a number of French vocables and easy conversational phrases, will be at the proper stage to take up the present work, and along with it a course of lessons on elementary grammar. Another class of pupils for whom it will be found suitable are those who have completed one year's work from a simple book for beginners, such as Elementary Object Lessons in French.

In the choice of subjects for conversation, the object has been to make them so far exhaustive as to include a wide range of the subjects which are familiar to the pupil, those not taken up in the present book being included in the third. The subjects have been taken in their natural order, and strictly on the principle that the pupil should commence with what comes nearest to him in ordinary experience. The first lessons accordingly deal with the human body, clothing, health, etc.
