Eine der wichtigsten Seiten der Technik im Epos ist unstreitig die Charakteristik der Personen. Dieselbe ist fiir das Rolandslied um so wichtiger, als über die Entstehung desselben verschiedene Ansichten herrschen, indem einige der Gelehrten einen einzigen Verfasser annehmen, andere dagegen mehrere. Es ist nun klar, dass bei einer Unter suchung über die Art und Weise, wie die Charaktere der einzelnen Personen aufgefasst und durchgefiihrt sind, sich Resultate ergeben müssen welche die Frage nach der Ent stehung des Gedichtes in gewissem Sinne lösen. Ich habe mich_ daher im folgenden der Aufgabe unterzogen, durch systematische Darstellung der Charakteristik zur Lösung dieses Problems beizutragen. Dieses Ziel habe ich auf zweierlei Wegen zu erreichen gesucht: einmal durch eine Untersuchung, in der ich die einzelnen Fragen, die bei der Betrachtung der Personen sich uns aufdrängen, auf zugleich erschöpfende und befriedigende Weise zu beantworten suche, dann durch eine Darstellung, in welcher ich eine genaue Zeichnung der einzelnen Gestalten gebe und dadurch dem Leser die Möglichkeit gewähre, die vorausgehende Unter suchung zu kontroliren und sich selbst ein Urtheil über das in ihr Gesagte zu bilden. Beide Theile ergänzen sich also gegenseitig.
