Fremdartig, ja rätselhaft steht die Poesie der alexandrinischen Zeit uns gegenuber, so viel uns auch von ihr erhalten ist. Wie die Dichter selbst fur uns schemenhaft bleiben, weit mehr als irgend einer der attischen Tragiker, mehr als Finder oder Simonides, mehr sogar als selbst der Homer, so gewinnen wir zu den von ihnen geschaffenen grossen Werken im Grunde kaum oder doch nur muhsam ein inneres Verhältnis. Es ist eine ahnliche Erfahrung, welche wir an den beiden Teilen des Faust machen. Der zeitlich fernere, aus fremdartigeren Bedingungen heraus geschaffene steht uns unendlich näher, und wie in einem gewaltigen, harmonisch sich entwickelnden Dichtergeist zu dem ersten der zweite Teil heranwuchs, kommt uns eben so schwer und unvollkommen zur inneren Anschauung, als wie das harmonisch sich auslebende Hellenenvolk von der Dichtung des fünften zu der des dritten Jahrhunderts gelangte.
