However, research has shown that many important industrial product and process innovations are developed within firms where the product is used, rather than by firms who manufacturer the product for sale to others (von Hippel, Furthermore, two recent studies focus on innovation in consumer markets and show that end-users not only innovate, but they also make key innovations in their field (luthj e, 2000; Shah, How these end-users obtain the resources and information necessary to develop their innovations is a research-worthy puzzle given the prevalence (luthje, 2000) and importance (shah, 2000) of the end-user innovations studied to date.
