Excerpt from Report On The Public School System, Including a Survey And Recommendations, 1920
A word here as to the principles underlying modern primary education is in place. The old conception that schools exist only to pass en to the following generation the sum of the knowledge of the fathers no longer holds, and we now believe that a school serves its real purpose only when it prepares the child to play his part intelligently and conscientiously in that society of which he or she must eventually become a member. Therefore, the child's preparation for participation in the social, political, and economic life of the community is of first importance. The abstractions of science and philosophy that formerly governed are now to be disregarded in the formation of school curricula.
