Excerpt from Das Problem der Form in der Bildenden Kunst
Soweit es sich um das Inzitatire handelt, steckt in der bildenden Kunst eine Art Natur erforschung und die lumstlerische Tätigkeit ist an diese gebunden. Die Probleme, welche dabeidie Form an den Kunstler stellt, sind von der Natur unmittelbar gegeben, - von der Wahr nehmung d iktiert. Werden diese Probleme allein gelost, d. H. Hat das Geschafene nur in dieser Beziehung eine Existenz, so ist es doch als Gebilde an sich noch zu keinem selbständigen Ganzen geworden, das neben und gegenüber der Natur sich behaupten kann. Um dies zu erreichen, muß sein imitativer Inhalt von einem weiteren Gesichtspunkte aus, den ich im allgemeinen als den architektonischen bezeichnen möchte, in die höhere K unstregion entwickelt werden, wobei ich natürlich die ubliche Spezielle Bedeutung des W'ortes Architektur bei Seite lasse. Archi tektur fasse ich dann nur als Bau eines Form ganzen, unabhängig von der Formenspra_che. Ein Drama, eine Symphonie hat diese Arch i tektur, diesen inneren Bau, ist ein organisches Ganze von V erkal tnissen, ebenso wie ein Bild, eine Statue, wenn die verschiedenen Künste auch in ganz verschiedenen F ormenwel ten leben.
