Von Anfang an und überall herrscht in Stellung und Be handlung der Frauen bei den alten Völkern eine vollkommene Nichtachtung und Verkennung der weiblichen Eigenart. Von seiner Geburt an lastet auf dem Weihe 'die ungeheueriichste Uh vernunft und daher die naturwidrigste Ungerechtigkeit. Das Weib erscheint als ein Hausthier, bestimmt zur Arbeit und Fortpflanzung; ein niederes Geschöpf, von dem keine Sitte und Sittlichkeit ver langt, sondern nur Gehorsam gefordert wird, und das, wenn es den Mann (gleichviel oh den Vater, Gatten oder den eigenen Sohn) nicht zufrieden stellt, nachdrücklich mit Schlägen und Hunger bestraft wird. Oft wird es zum Zeichen seiner Knecht schaft verstümmelt, wie bei den Australiern, welche dem Mädchen einen Finger der linken Hand kürzen. Doch bedeutsamer als jede körperliche Verstün melung ist seine geistige Verstümrnelung.
