The following pages contain the record of a hurried visit to the Straits and the Island of Java in 1852. The Diary was not originally in tended for publication, either in the form in which it now appears, or, under any other, but was written solely for the Author's own amusement, and to fill up an idle hour or two, when other resources of employment or recreation were not within his reach.
