Excerpt from The University Tutorial Series
The present book includes those portions of Statics Which are contained in the syllabus of the Science and Art Second (advanced) Stage Examination in Theoretical Mechanics. The earlier chapters require little or no knowledge of Trigonometry, involving as they do practically nothing beyond the mere definitions of the sine, cosine, and tangent. The later chapters deal with the General Conditions of Equi librium of Forces in one Plane; the Principles of Virtual Work and Virtual Velocities, the Laws of Friction, and the Centres of Gravity of frusta of cones, circular arcs, spherical zones, and the like. For the manuscript of these we are indebted to Mr. A. Cracknell, ma.

Paperback. Condition: New. Print on Demand. This book presents a comprehensive analysis of the principles governing the equilibrium of forces acting on stationary objects. Developed by the author during the late 19th century, these principles have since become fundamental to the field of mechanics. By delving into the nature of forces and their interactions, this book elucidates the conditions under which objects remain at rest, providing a solid foundation for understanding more complex mechanical systems. Through the exploration of concepts such as the parallelogram of forces, moments of forces, and the principle of virtual work, this book offers a detailed examination of the behavior of forces in equilibrium, making it an invaluable resource for students, engineers, and anyone seeking to grasp the intricacies of force interactions.
