Paperback. Condition: New. Print on Demand. This book is a fascinating record of the hearings held in 1996 to debate the Tongass Transfer and Transition Act, a bill that proposed transferring the Tongass National Forest from federal ownership to the State of Alaska. The hearings brought together a diverse group of witnesses, including local officials, environmentalists, industry representatives, and tribal leaders, each with their own unique perspectives on the fate of the Tongass. Through their testimony, the book provides a comprehensive overview of the complex issues surrounding the management of this vast and ecologically significant forest, including the competing claims of conservation, timber harvesting, and subsistence hunting and fishing. The book also explores the broader historical and legal context of federal land management in Alaska, and the ongoing debate over the balance between local control and national interests. Ultimately, the book offers valuable insights into the challenges and opportunities of sustainable resource management in a rapidly changing world.
