Excerpt from Discoveries a Critical Edition: With an Introduction and Notes on the True Purport and Genesis of the Book
Underwood, out of the analogy they hold to the Forest in my former book, and no otherwise. As the end~of the English, and the beginningof the Latin, sentence exactly coinci'de, we may suppose that the editor simply translated Jonson's sentence in the main and arranged the rest to fit his purpose. But it seems more probable still that the Latin defini tion had been written by Jonson himselfto be printed at the head of his Forest (sylva), and that the editor transferred it to the new-baptized Timber, as the word wanted explanation. This latter hypothesis is all but proved by a superficial examination of the original book (cf. Facsi mile, p. Where the capital the, printed at the bottom of the page, implies the recurrence of the same word at the top of the next. Now we must remark that the definite article is not to be found in this charac ter on the first page of the Discoveries, while it stands in exactly the same type at the head of: The Forest. On the strength of this curious evidence, we may conclude that the word Timber is ofthe editor's choosing; it was substituted to Jonson's Explo'rata (a), to' harmonize with the sylvan names of the above mentioned Collections (b).
