The book provides minute and explicit instructions to meet the needs of both the novice and experienced shepherd. The author describes all the varieties of Merino prevalent in his day and includes descriptions of the leading families of English sheep. The author's opinions on husbandry are largely drawn from his own experience and observations, but when citing others, he includes their names and quotes their language whenever possible. The author also includes historical information on the breeds, discusses principles and practices of breeding, and covers the topics of anatomy, diseases of sheep, and appropriate remedies. The book is comprehensive and thorough, and with the inclusion of observations, opinions, and language from other prominent breeders and veterinarians of the time, creates a more complete and authoritative picture of sheep husbandry in that era.
