The County Council of Northumberland in 1896 secured the farm - which is about 400 acres in extent - on lease for 21 years with the Object of carrying out demonstrations and experiments un-der careful supervision. The farm is not acommercial under taking but an educational institution, and is chiefly devoted to (a) demonstrations of important processes in the practice of the manuring, tillage, and cropping of land, particular attention being given to the economic improvement of poor grass land, (b) feeding experiments to demonstrate the relative value of food stuffs, and systems Of feeding for farm stock.
The Farm is maintained at the cost of the Northumberland County Council, and is managed by a sub-committee of the County Education Committee, the scientific direction being entrusted to the Agricultural. Department of the Durham College of Science, newcastle-ou-tyfne.
