About the Author
Peter D. Lax, PhD, is Professor Emeritus of Mathematics at the Courant Institute of Mathematical Sciences at New York University. Dr. Lax is the recipient of the Abel Prize for 2005 "for his groundbreaking contributions to the theory and application of partial differential equations and to the computation of their solutions." * A student and then colleague of Richard Courant, Fritz John, and K. O. Friedrichs, he is considered one of the world's leading mathematicians. He has had a long and distinguished career in pure and applied mathematics, and with over fifty years of experience in the field, he has made significant contributions to various areas of research, including integratable systems, fluid dynamics, and solitonic physics, as well as mathematical and scientific computing.

The principal subject of this study is the Korteweg-de Vries (KdV) equation, relevant for hydromagnetic waves and acoustic waves in anharmonic crystals. Using the method, the author demonstrates that the eigenvalues of the Schrà dinger operator are integrals of the KdV equation. It is also shown that higher order KdV equations share properties with a sequence of invariants. The author further explores the interaction of solitary waves within the context of the KdV equation. Through rigorous mathematical derivations and analysis of numerical calculations made by other researchers, an in-depth study is conducted on the asymptotic behavior and time history of these waves. These solitary waves are shown to exhibit remarkable properties, interacting in a manner that depends on the ratio of their speeds and undergoing processes of absorption, reemission, and splitting apart. The approach presented in this book offers a novel perspective on the study of nonlinear equations of evolution and provides valuable insights into the behavior of solitary waves within the KdV equation.
