Librarians of Colleges wishing to provide the most necessary books for the study of German may be materially helped in their selection by referring to this Guide. Alth_ough written expressly for the use of English students, the book may also prove useful to the ever increasing class of Continental and American students who are devoting themselves to the scientific study of the German language and literature. They will, no doubt, have to add to and to omit from the lists given on the following pages, but the greater part of the Guide will be of service to students and teachers of no matter what nationality. Students who are anxious to take up any special branch of German philology.
