Synopsis

Excerpt from Assyrian Historiography, Vol. 3: A Source Study

To the serious student of Assyrian history, it is obvious that we cannot write that history until we have adequately dis cussed the sources. We must learn what these are, in other words, we must begin with a bibliography of the various docu ments. Then we must divide them into their various classes, for different classes of inscriptions are of varying degrees of accuracy. Finally, we must study in detail for each reign the sources, discover which of the various documents or groups of documents are the most nearly contemporaneous with the events they narrate, and on these, and on these alone, base our history of the period.

Paperback. Condition: New. Print on Demand. This book studies how historical writing in one of the earlier culture peoples evolved. The Assyrians derived their historical writing from the Babylonians, who recorded not deeds in war but building operations, particularly those in honor of the gods. The Assyrians began with a similar focus but gradually began to inscribe more data. We do not see true annalistic inscriptions until approximately 1100 B. C., with the reign of Tiglath Pileser I. The author discusses the problems with using these inscriptions as sources for Assyrian history and their development as historical records, illustrating how different sources and editions had varying levels of accuracy and completeness. Through this, the author demonstrates that the most accessible editions are often the latest and poorest and that discovering which documents are the most nearly contemporaneous is the key to a correct understanding of Assyrian history. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. In rare cases, an imperfection in the original, such as a blemish or missing page, may be replicated in the book. print-on-demand item. Seller Inventory # 9781332102402_0
