Excerpt from Empirical Formulas, Vol. 19
IN the results of most experiments of a quantitative nature, two variables occur, such as the relation between the pressure and the volume of a certain quantity of gas, or the relation between the elongation of a wire and the force producing it. On plotting the sets of corresponding values it is found, if they really depend on each other, that the points so located lie approximately on a smooth curve.

Paperback. Condition: New. Print on Demand. This book introduces a simplified method for determining constants in empirical formulas. The method, which the author claims has not been covered in any other book in English, uses straight lines alone to visualize how constants in formulas affect outcomes. This accessible approach should suit engineers and others needing to apply empirical formulas for problem-solvingā"even when a formula's physical basis is not a primary concern. The author acknowledges that the formulas developed in this book only approximate true mathematical relationships between variables, but argues that they are nevertheless useful for estimation purposes. The approach is generalizable to a wide range of scenarios involving variables related in an arithmetic or geometric series. The author explains how to apply the method to each type of series and to interpret the results. They also include worked examples with explanations to illustrate the process. Engineers will find this book helpful not only for its insights on empirical formulas, but also for its clear and concise explanations of series and their applications.
