Excerpt from The Complete Phonographer, and Reporter's Guide: An Inductive Exposition of Phonography, With Its Application to All Branches of Reporting, and Affording the Fullest Instruction to Those Who Have Not the Assistance of an Oral, Teacher; Also Intended as a School-Book
The leading features of Phonography are the result of the labors of Mr. Isaac Pitman of England, who for nearly thirty years has devoted much of his time to its development and propagation; but the high degre' of perfection to which it has been brought, is owing in great measure to the suggestions of thousands of practical phonographers, both in England and the United States. This mode of development has its merits and demerits. Coming as it has from the brains of such a vast number and variety of people, Phonography possesses a richness of material which could hardly have been obtained in any other way but, on the other hand, this kind of growth has had a tendency to render the system less uniform and consistent in matters of detail than it would have been bad it emanated from a single mind.

Paperback. Condition: New. Print on Demand. This book marked a departure from earlier practices in shorthand and quickly became the standard for the form. It is still the most popular and widely-taught system. The author provides a thorough grounding in the principles of phonetics on which the system is founded, giving a clear explanation of the relationship between sounds within a determined degree of likeness and the signs used to represent them. The text offers a number of significant improvements and revisions to the system that has made it more consistent and accessible, including the introduction of a vowel-scale and simplified stem-signs for words with similar consonant combinations. In addition to detailed instruction in the system and its use, the author provides extensive exercises in writing and reading that will help the learner to master the system and gain fluency in its use.
