Excerpt from A Pictorial Primary Arithmetic, on the Plan of Object-Lessons
The elementary combinations of numbers, with appropriate illustrations, are treated in this book upon the plan of object-lessons. Addition and Subtraction, which are the converse of each other, are given in immediate connection; so also are Multiplication and Division. Each combination is thus presented in a variety of forms, and may be fully committed to mem ory without wearying the learner.
Nearly every lesson is accompanied by an exercise for the slate. The figures in script are from the excellent Copy-books of the Messrs. Payson, Dunton, and Serib ner. In the Exercises in Addition, in columns, all the elementary combinations are arranged progressively, and repeated many times; if the pupil becomes accurate ind quick in adding these, he will readily acquire facil ity in the practice of the other mechanical operations of arithmetic.

The lessons adhere to the belief that children intuitively grasp basic numerical concepts such as more and less, and the author uses simple language and engaging illustrations to introduce more complex ideas like addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division. Starting with numbers 1 to 10, the book gradually introduces increasingly challenging concepts with the goal of instilling a solid foundation in basic arithmetic operations. Through the author's structured approach, accompanied by exercises to practice skills, young readers will develop confidence in their ability to solve arithmetic problems and progress in their mathematical learning journey.
