Due to the fact that we had available only a relatively small amount of the hydrochloride of the -diamino toluene, as compared with a large quantity of the crude -diamino toluene, and also that the oxidation of the diacetyl deriva tive of the former gave very much poorer results than in the case of the latter, most of the reactions were carried on with the 7-amino series.
