Excerpt from Report on the Variations of the Magnetic Intensity: Observed at Different Points of the Earth's Surface
It is to France we owe the first rightly directed experimental inquiry on this subject. The instructions, drawn up by the members of the French Academy Of Sciences for the expedition of La Perouse, contain a recommendation that the time of vibra tion of a dipping needle should be observed at stations widely remote, as a test of the equality or difference of the magnetic intensity; suggesting also with a sagacity anticipating the result, that such Observations should particularly be made at those parts of the earth where the dip was greatest and where it was least.

Seller: Forgotten Books, London, United Kingdom
Paperback. Condition: New. Print on Demand. This book examines variations in the intensity of Earth's magnetic field over time. In the 1790s, scientists realized that the strength of Earth's magnetic field varied by location. Building on this, the author synthesizes data from dozens of scientists across more than four decades of study to produce the first detailed global map of the magnetic field. The author analyzes these variations in the context of theories about the source of the magnetic field and the dynamics of its behavior. These insights continue to inform scientists' understanding of Earth's magnetic field. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. In rare cases, an imperfection in the original, such as a blemish or missing page, may be replicated in the book. print-on-demand item. Seller Inventory # 9781331978015_0
