Excerpt from Laboratory Methods: With Special Reference to the Needs of the General Practitioner
It is the aim of the authors to keep this little volume true to name and purpose. This cannot be realized if extensive alterations are made in each edition. The simple methods suggested have been used for many years and have proven a right to a permanent place. We are not justified in substituting newer methods until they prove themselves superior to the older ones.
Some procedures have been added to the text, but we have pre ferred to place the majority of these in the appendix rather than disturb the simplicity of the text. Among the chief of these are Elastic Tissue Staining, salting-out Method for Tubercle Bacilli, A Simple Gram Stain, An Invariable Blood Stain, A Dressing for Laboratory Tables, and a number of other notes.
Since making the second revision, a thousand and one laboratory innovations have appeared in literature. Many have been tried out and abandoned, others must be tested more thoroughly before being included in texts, still others are too difficult to find a place in a book designed for the practitioner and a great many are not worth trying out.
