This treatise has been written for those interested in the fabrication, merchandising and application of bituminous products. It embraces (1) methods serving as aguide for the works chemist engaged in testing and analyzing raw and manufactured products; (2) data for assisting the refinery or factory superintendent in blending and compounding mixtures; (3) information enabling the ambitious salesman to enlarge his knowledge concerning the scope and limitations-bf the articles he vends; and (4) the principles underlying the. Practical application of bituminous products for structural purposes, of interest to the engineer, contractor and architect. Subject-matter of sole value to the technical man has been segregated in Part V, Methods of Testing, excepting the outline Of the Chemistry of Bituminous Substances appearing in Chapter III. These sections, however, may be' passed over by the non technical man, without interfering materially with the continuity of the work.
In view of the vast amount of ground covered in this volume, and fully realizing the limitations of his proficiency in some of its branches and ramifications, the author has taken it upon himself to draw freely from contemporary text-books and journal articles. In such instances, his endeavor has been to place due credit where it belongs, by referring to the source Of such extraneous information. Nevertheless, there has been included a substantial amount Of original data accumulated by the author during the past nineteen years, most of which appears in print herein for the first time.
