Excerpt from A Summer Visit of Three Rhode Islanders to the Massachusetts Bay in 1651

The memorable visit of Dr. John Clarke, Obadiah Holmes and John Cran dall, members of the Baptist church in Newport, to William fitter, one of the early settlers in the Massachusetts Bay, took place in July, 1651. It is proposed in this paper to review the history of that visit, that we may ascertain, if pos sible, the object of it, the alleged crim inal conduct of which these troublesome visitors were guilty, and the severity of the punishment which they received at the hands of the Puritan magistrates.

Paperback. Condition: New. Print on Demand. This book delves into a significant event in 17th-century colonial America: the visit of three Baptist church members from Rhode Island to William Witter, a resident of Massachusetts Bay, in 1651. The author meticulously examines the historical context and motivations behind this visit, challenging conventional interpretations and shedding light on the complex dynamics between religious freedom and Puritan authority during this period. The narrative unfolds against the backdrop of the Massachusetts Bay Colony's strict Puritan governance and its intolerance towards dissenting religious beliefs, particularly those of Baptists. The author scrutinizes the prevailing assumption that the visit was a calculated political maneuver designed to provoke Puritan authorities and prevent Rhode Island's annexation to Massachusetts. Instead, a compelling case is made for understanding the visit as an act of Christian compassion towards Witter, an aging Baptist who had faced persecution for his beliefs. This book offers a nuanced exploration of religious persecution, individual conscience, and the struggle for religious liberty in early America. By revisiting this historical episode, the author provides valuable insights into the complexities of Puritan society and the enduring legacy of those who challenged its authority in the name of religious freedom. The book's exploration of this seemingly small event ultimately reveals profound truths about the ongoing quest for tolerance and understanding in a diverse society.
