Excerpt from Francois Rabelais
In my discussion of Rabelais's work I have assumed less knowledge on the part of my readers than I should have done if I had been writing for Frenchmen, and accordingly I have given a more or less detailed analysis of Gargantua and Pantagruel. I have also quoted from the text here and there at con siderable length, using for this purpose the admirable translation of Mr. W. F. Smith, which adheres much more closely to the original than does Urquhart's classical work. In some of the shorter passages quoted the transla tion is my own.

Seller: Forgotten Books, London, United Kingdom
Paperback. Condition: New. Print on Demand. This book presents a critical biography of François Rabelais, one of the most illustrious literary figures of early 16th-century France. The book draws on a wealth of newly discovered archival evidence to paint a more complete picture of the man and his life. It challenges many assumptions about Rabelais's early life: the book reveals he was born in 1495 and not 1483 as traditionally claimed. The book also presents fresh interpretations of his life, arguing for example that his early education was in a Franciscan friary rather than a Benedictine abbey. The author shows that Rabelais was a man of vast learning, not only in medicine, but across many fields. Engrossed in the spirit of the humanist movement, he was an ardent advocate for the new learning. Rabelais emerges from this book as a figure of great complexity and fascination, a man whose work continues to be read and enjoyed today.
