Excerpt from Martin Ruter
Nothing of sectionalism marked that early Methodism. Jesse Lee, the Virginian, became the apostle of New England; Joshua Soule, of Maine, the apologist of the pro slavery region, transferred in the division of 1844 to the episcopacy of the Church South. The paramount concern of every itinerant was to preach the gospel. There was a lively, realizing sense of the wrath to come. The evangelistic seed yielded its fruit in an increase of communicants from six hundred in 1772 to fifteen thousand in 1784, and six hundred thousand in 1833.
