Excerpt from Memorials of Methodism in Virginia: From Its Introduction Into the State in the Year 1772 to the Year 1829
The constant aini of the author has been' to give a faithful record of the movement of Methodism in the State from its earliest period, to the date at which the volume closes. The critical reader will find many departures from exact rules, but he must bear in mind that Methodism, like every other system, has passed through formative stages, each of which has been marked by measures which to us appear anomalous, but were, in fact, the best and wisest that could have been adopted under existing circumstances.
