Excerpt from The Chief End of Man: An Exposition of the First Answer of the Shorter Catechism
The author of this work has had in view these facts and these classes of persons in composing it.
He has selected the first answer in the Catechism as his subject, because it presents in itself a topic demanding the first attention of every human being - nothing less than the design of our existence, and the supreme duty of our life. As a secondary object he designed the work as a specimen both to children and their catechists, of the manner in which the Catechism may be made plain, if not attractive, and his aim throughout was to lead its learners of every age to understand, and by the blessing of God, to feel, the personal application of a truth which many of them have regarded in no other light than as a sentence for recitation.

John Hall can still remember the first book he ever read. It was Harry The Dirty Dog. Since that day, he's always loved reading. When he was in fifth grade, he decided he was going to be a writer when he grew up and wrote his first novel, The Mystery of the Leopard's Eyes (unfortunately, it was never published and to this day, still sits in his desk drawer). But years later he did become a published author. John grew up in Brooklyn, with a younger brother and twenty-one cousins (yes, 21!), but now lives in New York City.

This book explores the concept of the chief end of man from a religious perspective, arguing that glorifying God is the ultimate purpose of human existence. The author examines the nature of God's glory, our duty to glorify him, and the various ways in which we can do so. Throughout, the book draws heavily on the teachings of the Westminster Assembly's Shorter Catechism. The author emphasizes that glorifying God is not merely a matter of outward acts of worship but also involves living in accordance with his will and making his glory the supreme motive of every action.
