Excerpt from A Letter to the Reverend the Presbytery of Tain: On the Subject of the Laws Which Affect the Roman Catholics
To the Legislature, and as the Presbytery of Tain seem to have been unanimous in favour of the Petition, I think it proper to state to them in writing, what I should certainly, had it been possible, have said at the discussion in the Synod. Having had the honour of representing your Re verend Body in the General Assembly, I hope you will not deem this communica tion improper; for I am deeply impressed with the conviction that it is a duty which every man owes to his country, to endea vour to dissipate prejudices, which he is convinced are most injurious to its inte rests. Without any farther preface, 'i shall proceed with the subject.

Excerpt from A Letter to the Reverend the Presbytery of Tain: On the Subject of the Laws Which Affect the Roman Catholics London, May 31, 1813. Gentlemen, I Perceive by the public papers, that the Synod of Ross have agreed, with the exception of one dissenting voice, to petition Parliament against the measure of granting any further relief to the Roman Catholic inhabitants of these realms. Had I been present on that occasion, I should undoubtedly have stated my reasons for dissenting from that Petition. Seller: Forgotten Books, London, United Kingdom
Paperback. Condition: New. Print on Demand. This book presents a passionate defense of granting civil rights to Roman Catholics in early 19th-century Britain, a time when religious intolerance and prejudice were deeply ingrained in society. The author, a Presbyterian minister, argues that excluding Catholics from full participation in political and social life is not only unjust but also detrimental to the nationââ â¢s strength and stability. He refutes common arguments against Catholic emancipation, such as the fear of papal influence and the accusation of inherent Catholic untrustworthiness. The author demonstrates that such anxieties are based on outdated and inaccurate perceptions, arguing that granting Catholics full citizenship would actually strengthen the British Empire by harnessing the talents and loyalty of a large segment of the population. He challenges the prevailing view of Catholics as a disloyal and dangerous group, advocating for their inclusion as a vital part of the national fabric. The book offers a compelling and insightful critique of religious intolerance, underscoring the need for greater understanding and respect between different faiths in a society striving for unity and progress.
