Excerpt from The Biblical Lessons: A Chapter on Biblical Archaeology
Close investigation extending over fifteen years ripened in me the conviction that the Samaritans have preserved for us in an almost fossilised state customs which go back to the time of the Second Temple. They represent a phase in Jewry of Jewish rites, of Jewish practices, of Jewish religious conceptions and Views, which one may call pre-talmudic, pre-rabbinic, which concur in a remarkable degree with the traditions and customs prevailing also among the Jews outside of Jerusalem, and agree also with the most ancient traditions and customs of the Christian Church.

Paperback. Condition: New. Print on Demand. This book is a highly detailed examination into the origins of the Bible as it is practiced in the present day. The author undertakes a review of historical, literary, and archaeological evidence to understand how the Bible has been used in public worship throughout the ages, from when it was first established as a religious duty to inculcate reading it in the Jewish worship to the present day. Through a comparative study of Jewish, Samaritan, and Christian liturgical practices, the author traces the evolution of Biblical readings in religious services, and how these practices have shaped the development of modern civilization.
