Excerpt from Nineteen-Two in Vermont: The Fight for Local Option; Ten Years After
Ten years ago this month the Vermont public learned that several republicans were scoring for posi tion in the approaching race for the governorship. This was startling from the fact that in years there had not been an open season for candidates, it hav ing been the rule of the dominant political regime to settle personal rivalries before the convention season started. The strife between candidates had not gone far when it became apparent that a systematic plan was on foot for the establishment of high license and local option. To accomplish this the repeal of the prohibitory law was necessary, and on this issue the battle raged for months. The bitter struggle spread into every city, town and gore of the state. When it was all over prohibition was in ruins, and Vermont proceeded to take a step upward.
