Paperback. Condition: New. Print on Demand. This historical work of nonfiction focuses on the struggle against the expansion of slavery in the United States during the 1830s, beginning with its condemnation in the Ohio Constitution. When a group of citizens formed an anti-slavery society, their local newspaper met their activism with hostility, prompting the publication of the Philanthropist, a journal focused on the abolitionist cause. Rising tensions between pro- and anti-slavery factions resulted in rioting, including an attack on the offices of the Philanthropist. By examining this early clash, the author explores the complex social, economic, and political forces that led to the Civil War and the fierce debates surrounding the issue of slavery in 19th-century America.
