Excerpt from The Invisible Enemy
From the water-front two long piers projected into the sea, where ships lay end to end their masts penciled against the sky, taking on freight. Some distance east of them, amid heaps of oyster shell, there smoked a row of canneries. Westward, the water-front was occupied by boat-sheds and fish houses for a mile or more, when they yielded to a broad= shell drive bordered by white mansions.
