Paperback. Condition: New. Print on Demand. This book presents the full record of a trial held in 1863 against Assistant-Surgeon Warren Webster, indicted on charges of disobeying military orders and exhibiting conduct prejudicial to good order and discipline. The case revolves around Webster's refusal to comply with an order to release a patient at the McDougall General Hospital to the custody of the military for transfer to another facility. Rooted in a dispute over the respective authorities of the military command and the medical department over patients in general hospitals, the trial proceedings examined the division of authority, military regulations, and the balance between following orders and upholding oneās own judgment and interpretation of regulations. The book offers a compelling account of a complex conflict between medical authority and military command, providing insights into military law, medical ethics, and the realities of medical care during the Civil War.
